Amile Jefferson Picks Duke Over The Wolfpack

by Daniel on May 16th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
Posted In: Basketball

After months of recruiting and a few additional months of anticipation, Amile Jefferson finally announced his college decision at 4:00 pm Tuesday afternoon. The 6’8″ forward from Philadelphia choose to attend Duke over NC State during a press conference at Friends Central School.

NC State was thought to be in a good position heading into the day but Jefferson’s father and coach both preferred the Blue Devils over NC State and it proved to be the deciding factor.

Jefferson’s decision is one that will have an immediate impact on ACC play next season as the Blue Devils added a player who will see immediate minutes either coming off the bench or perhaps starting,  and the Wolfpack lost out on one that would have provided much-needed depth behind C.J. Leslie and Richard Howell. Here is a look at NC State’s and Duke’s rotations following the Jefferson announcement.

NC State

PG: Brown / Lewis

SG: Purvis

SF: Wood / Warren

PF: Leslie / De Thay

PF:  Howell / Vandenberg

Duke

PG: Cook / Thorton

SG: Dawkins / Curry

SF: Hairston / Murphy

PF:  Kelly / Jefferson

C: Plumlee / Plumlee

Tyler Harris to Transfer

by Daniel on May 2nd, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Posted In: Basketball, Featured Post

Today news broke that sophomore forward Tyler Harris has decided to transfer from NC State. Harris only averaged 6.9 minutes, 1.8 points, and 1.2 rebounds per game this past season, but he would have been a key member for the Wolfpack in 2012 providing some bench help behind starters Richard Howell and C.J. Leslie.

The absence of Tyler Harris will provide additional playing time for junior big man Jordan Vandenberg, who red-shirted last year with a shoulder injury, and sophomore Thomas De They, who played sparingly in 2011 and looked lost pretty much the entire time he was on the floor.

The Wolfpack still have a wild card in 6’8″ freshman forward Amile Jefferson who has still yet to commit to a school. Jefferson is reportedly choosing between Duke, Kentucky and NC State but who knows when that announcement will occur, the only word from Jefferson’s camp is that we can expect him to announce an announcement date “soon”. Jefferson would be a tremendous boost for a Wolfpack team that, with the loss of Harris and forward DeShawn Painter are extremely thin in the front court. He would provide the Wolfpack with impact minutes off the bench, but that might just be a problem for Amile. With Richard Howell and C.J. Leslie intrenched in the starting lineup the best he could hope for in his freshman year would be solid minutes off the bench.

Here is a look at the Wolfpack rotation with Amile Jefferson in the mix. Notice that without Jefferson the skill level at the forward position takes a nose dive when Howell and Leslie get in foul trouble.

PG: Lorenzo Brown / Tyler Lewis / Rodney Purvis

SG: Rodney Purvis / Scott Wood / Lorenzo Brown

SF: Scott Wood / T.J. Warren

PF: C.J. Leslie / Amile Jefferson / Thomas De Thaey

PF: Richard Howell / Amile Jefferson / Jordan Vandenberg

To wrap things up here is a link to an old Deadspin article on Jordan Vandenberg. ENJOY!

NC State’s NFL Draft Class

by Daniel on April 29th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
Posted In: Football

Now that the three-day extravaganza that is the NFL draft is now complete lets take a look at the group of former NC State players and see how they might impact their new teams.

TJ Graham #69 overall

Projected to go later in the draft, TJ Graham was the first Wolfpack player off the board, going number 69th overall to the Buffalo Bills. While this might have been a little early to take Graham, there is no denying his break away speed and ability to make an immediate impact on special teams. Graham will need to continue to develop his route running skills and improve his hands if he hopes to develop into an every down receiver but expect him to compete for the kick return job in Buffalo this year.

Russell Wilson #75 overall

Going just six picks after TJ Graham, Russell Wilson was nabbed by the Seattle Seahawks with the 12th pick in the 3rd round. Russell Wilson did everything he could do in college to prove to NFL scouts that he could be an effective quarterback at the next level, and if he had about three more inches to him he would have been a sure fire first round draft pick going right after Andrew Luck and RGIII. Going to the Seahawks will give Wilson an opportunity to compete for a starting spot against free agent pick-up Matt Flynn and last year’s QB Travarus Jackson, but I would expect Wilson to serve as the backup quarterback in Seattle.

Terrell Manning #163 overall

After forgoing his senior year to enter the NFL draft, Manning slipped down the draft board just a bit before going to the Green Bay Packers with the 28th pick in the 7th round. Manning should be a perfect fit for the Packers who use their linebackers in a variety of blitz packages. Manning’s the ability to rush the quarterback should put him in a great position to land a backup spot with the Packers and he will have the chance to learn from a group of experienced linebackers and an excellent defensive coordinate in Dom Capers.

Audie Cole #210 overall –Minnesota Vikings

JR Sweezy #225 overall –Seattle Seahawks

Markus Kuhn #239 overall –New York Giants

George Bryan Undrafted FA –Dallas Cowboys

Taylor Gentry Undrafted FA –Kansas City Chiefs
